September is National Preparedness Month: Get Ready, Nanooks!
Sept. 10, 2025
Being prepared is part of being a resilient university. September is National Preparedness Month, a reminder that being ready for the unexpected is part of keeping our ²ÝÁñÉçÇø community safe and resilient. Here in ²ÝÁñÉçÇø, preparedness isn’t just smart — it’s essential.
This year, ²ÝÁñÉçÇø Emergency Management is encouraging all students, staff, and faculty to take four quick steps:
- Refresh your emergency kit: At least 72 hours of food, water, and supplies. Don’t forget flashlights, batteries, warm clothing, and N95 masks for wildfire smoke or volcanic ash.
- Make a simple plan: Know two exits from your building, where your outdoor assembly area is, and how you’ll connect with family if phones are busy.
- Practice the basics:
- Earthquake — Drop, cover, hold on.
- Fire — Pull alarm, call 911, evacuate.
- Active shooter — Run, hide, fight.
- Stay informed: Sign up for , check the ²ÝÁñÉçÇø Emergency Management website, and keep a NOAA weather radio handy.
Preparedness is a team sport. A few minutes this month makes a big difference for you, your colleagues, and our students — on every campus and across ²ÝÁñÉçÇø’s statewide research sites. If you have questions or need department copies of the guides, contact EHSRM/Emergency Management.
